Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Mental Retardation

Developed in 1992, Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Mental Retardation was perhaps the first of its kind integrated treatment and case management program for persons with mental retardation. Drawing on the disparate fields of substance abuse treatment, cognitive therapy, and case management, this book gives you a step by step process for creating and maintaining a substance abuse treatment program for persons with mental retardation. The book begins with a description of the problem of substance abuse among persons with mental retardation. Then the conceptual foundation for treating substance abuse problems among persons with mental retardation is presented. Based upon the foregoing factors, the treatment parameters of the program are delineated. Next a program narrative is presented, along with a training curriculum for training staff to deliver the program. The appendices are chalked full of practical forms such as a participant’s workbook, screening and assessment forms, a user’s manual and policy and procedure manual. Taken in its entirety, this book provides the basis for effective program for persons with mental retardation suffering from substance misuse disorders.
